All School Professional Development:
Learning Reading Methods By Observation and Implementation

Susie Wilde will come to K-5 Elementary Schools and give on-the-job-training at all grade levels in a series of five in-class 21/2 sessions. Susie Wilde will model methods to help students understand structure and style of stories and how they apply to writing. These consecutive, building sessions show how to:

Susie Wilde will present whole class demonstrations and then attending teachers will practice these reading methods in small groups. These sessions will be offered every two weeks, so that teachers have time to use these reading methods in their classrooms and bring reflections and evaluations to the next session. They will earn an additional 13 hours for clinical application as they apply these reading methods in their own classrooms. Included in each session will be a short period of time for explanation, teacher discussion, questions and problem-solving. There will be a final evaluation at the project's conclusion. 2 CEU credits. Additional CEU hours can be added with teacher workshops and/ or observations.

Methods of Blending Reading with Writing and Art

With so many concerns about raising test scores, children often become victims of testing rather than partners in their own learning. This playful approach involves them, invites them, and fights their fears. Find out ways to help students come up with ideas, organization, and vivid ways to express themselves. Then learn how they can make images to express their feelings about what they've read and written. Within this class we will learn methods for analyze books to understand story, write a collaborative story and then each teacher will leave make images to create an hand-made book!

"It Was A Good Book": Methods to Help Children Better Understand Their Reading

How do you get children beyond their typical description: "it was a good book"? Using picture books for all ages, Susie Wilde, children's book reviewer, reading and writing teacher, will give participants a sense of what makes books work by offering techniques and hands-on experiences with books. These will suggest a common vocabulary, playful learning activities, and methods to help students reflect, understand, and develop a stronger sense of the structure and style of books they read.

Methods of Understanding Structure and Style in Reading

Reading analysis and writing can be overwhelming and confusing to both teachers and students! Susie Wilde, reading and writing consultant, breaks understanding of these important reading elements into small playful learning activities. Each activity will focus on recent picture books and there will much opportunity for analysis and discussion. After participants understand these facets of writing through reading analysis, we'll link reading and writing by creating a story.
